How the card-cost table works
A plain converter answers one question: what an amount is worth at a reference rate. When you pay by card, two more things change the figure. The issuer adds a foreign-currency transaction fee, published as a percentage of the converted amount, and the card earns miles or cashback on the charge, which offsets part of that fee.
Each pair page starts from the amount you enter, converts it at the ECB reference rate, adds each card’s published FX fee, then subtracts the value of the rewards that spend earns. Miles are valued at a cents-per-mile figure you control (the site default is 2.0¢); cashback counts at face value. Minimum-spend thresholds and monthly caps are applied, and the note on each row says when one of them changes the result.
Cards are ranked by the estimated net SGD cost, lowest first, with ties broken alphabetically by issuer and then card name. The order is a fixed function of the amount and mile value you enter; affiliate status is not an input. Cards whose current terms SGfi has not been able to confirm from the issuer are left out of the table.
Each page also explains dynamic currency conversion, the offer to be charged in SGD while abroad, and how to decline it at a terminal. For card choice beyond a single foreign purchase, the miles card comparison and cashback card comparison rank cards on your whole monthly spending, and the miles & travel tools cover award flights by destination.
Where the numbers come from
Exchange rates: ECB euro reference rates via Frankfurter. The ECB publishes once per business day; SGD cross rates are derived from those EUR fixes.
Card terms: FX fees and foreign-currency earn rates for 30 of 36 cards, read from each issuer’s own T&Cs and fee schedules, verified 23 Oct 2026.
Everything is calculated in your browser. Amounts you enter are not stored or sent anywhere.
These figures are estimates based on the amount and mile value you entered. They are not a quote from any bank or card network, and the SGD that posts to your statement can differ.
- The foreign amount is converted at the ECB reference rate. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) apply their own daily rates, which can differ from the ECB reference rate.
- FX fees are as published by each issuer as of 23 Oct 2026, applied to the converted amount.
- The purchase is a single in-store transaction, and it is the only foreign-currency spend on the card this month. A minimum-spend threshold is tested against this amount alone.
- Rewards are earned on the SGD charged, including the FX fee, and miles are valued at the cents-per-mile figure you set.
- Rewards are subject to issuer exclusions, caps, merchant category (MCC) rules and promotional periods, which can change or end.
- Other spend on the card in the same month, which can move a card past a minimum spend or into a cap.
- Dynamic currency conversion, cash advances, ATM fees, merchant surcharges and annual-fee waivers.
- Welcome offers and rewards on spend outside this one transaction.
