These figures are estimates based on the amount and mile value you entered. They are not a quote from any bank or card network, and the SGD that posts to your statement can differ.

Assumptions used
  • The foreign amount is converted at the ECB reference rate. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) apply their own daily rates, which can differ from the ECB reference rate.
  • FX fees are as published by each issuer as of 23 Oct 2026, applied to the converted amount.
  • The purchase is a single in-store transaction, and it is the only foreign-currency spend on the card this month. A minimum-spend threshold is tested against this amount alone.
  • Rewards are earned on the SGD charged, including the FX fee, and miles are valued at the cents-per-mile figure you set.
Not modelled
  • Rewards are subject to issuer exclusions, caps, merchant category (MCC) rules and promotional periods, which can change or end.
  • Other spend on the card in the same month, which can move a card past a minimum spend or into a cap.
  • Dynamic currency conversion, cash advances, ATM fees, merchant surcharges and annual-fee waivers.
  • Welcome offers and rewards on spend outside this one transaction.

Paying in renminbi

RMB and CNY refer to the same currency. Renminbi is the currency’s name, the yuan is its unit, and CNY is the three-letter code used on statements and in the ECB data this page draws on (Frankfurter currency list, checked 23 Oct 2026).

Renminbi spending from Singapore is mostly on trips to Shanghai, Beijing and other mainland cities, along with online orders from platforms that bill in CNY.

Payment apps change the mechanics less than they appear to. When a Singapore card is linked to a mobile wallet and used to pay a merchant in China, the charge that reaches the card is still a CNY transaction converted by the card network, so the card’s FX fee applies as the table shows. If the app adds its own fee for foreign cards, that sits on top of the figures here and is not modelled. Issuers also decide how wallet-routed charges are categorised for rewards, so the card’s exclusion list is worth reading if you expect to pay mostly through an app.

If a merchant or payment screen offers to settle in SGD rather than CNY, that is dynamic currency conversion, covered in the box above: the merchant’s conversion replaces the network’s, and an issuer fee for transactions processed overseas may still apply.

Renminbi cash bought in Singapore carries a money changer’s spread, and taking cash from a credit card at an ATM is a cash advance with separate charges under the card’s terms. Neither is part of the card table, which covers card purchases only.

Paying in SGD abroad: dynamic currency conversion

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is when a terminal, ATM or checkout page offers to charge you in Singapore dollars instead of the local currency. If you accept, the merchant’s payment provider converts the amount at a rate it sets, with its own margin built in, and the card network’s conversion is skipped.

Paying in CNY instead leaves a single conversion with the card network, followed by your issuer’s published foreign-currency fee. With DCC, the merchant’s margin replaces the network rate, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD transactions processed outside Singapore, so the total can carry two layers of cost instead of one.

Declining it at a terminal in China:

  • When the screen shows two amounts, one in SGD and one in CNY, select the CNY amount.
  • If the cashier selects for you, ask for the charge in CNY before you tap or enter your PIN.
  • On a printed slip, check that the currency is CNY and that no conversion rate or markup line appears.
  • Online, choose the local-currency price where a checkout offers a currency switch.

Common questions

How much is 1 SGD in RMB today?

1 SGD = 5.2173 CNY at the ECB reference rate for 23 Oct 2026, so 1 yuan is about S$0.19. RMB and CNY are the same currency; CNY is its code.

Are RMB, CNY and yuan the same thing?

Yes. Renminbi (RMB) is the name of China’s currency, the yuan is its unit of account, and CNY is the ISO code banks and the ECB use. A price of 100 yuan, RMB 100 and CNY 100 are the same amount.

Is it cheaper to be charged in SGD or CNY by card in China?

Settling in CNY leaves the conversion to the card network, plus the issuer’s published fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Settling in SGD lets the merchant’s provider convert at a rate it chooses, and an issuer fee for overseas-processed SGD charges can still apply. Each quote can be checked against the reference rate here.

Which fees apply when I pay by card in China?

Visa and Mastercard each convert at their own daily rate, which can differ from the ECB reference rate. The issuer adds its foreign-currency fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Paying through a mobile wallet linked to the card does not remove these, and the wallet may add its own fee for foreign cards, which this page does not model.

How has SGD to CNY moved over the last 90 days?

Over the 90 days to 23 Oct 2026, 1 SGD ranged from 5.2155 CNY (15 Oct 2026) to 5.3094 CNY (09 Sep 2026), averaging 5.2603 CNY (ECB via Frankfurter). Past movements are not indicative of future rates.
