These figures are estimates based on the amount and mile value you entered. They are not a quote from any bank or card network, and the SGD that posts to your statement can differ.

Assumptions used
  • The foreign amount is converted at the ECB reference rate. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) apply their own daily rates, which can differ from the ECB reference rate.
  • FX fees are as published by each issuer as of 23 Oct 2026, applied to the converted amount.
  • The purchase is a single in-store transaction, and it is the only foreign-currency spend on the card this month. A minimum-spend threshold is tested against this amount alone.
  • Rewards are earned on the SGD charged, including the FX fee, and miles are valued at the cents-per-mile figure you set.
Not modelled
  • Rewards are subject to issuer exclusions, caps, merchant category (MCC) rules and promotional periods, which can change or end.
  • Other spend on the card in the same month, which can move a card past a minimum spend or into a cap.
  • Dynamic currency conversion, cash advances, ATM fees, merchant surcharges and annual-fee waivers.
  • Welcome offers and rewards on spend outside this one transaction.

Spending yen on a Japan trip

Yen trips from Singapore tend to centre on Tokyo and Osaka, and the spending pattern differs from shorter regional holidays: hotel bills, rail travel and shopping can each produce a single charge in the tens of thousands of yen. Because the yen is quoted without decimals, those figures look large, and it is easy to misjudge one by a factor of ten. The quick conversion table above gives fixed reference points (¥1,000, ¥10,000, ¥100,000) for checking a price at a glance.

Large single charges matter for the card table in two ways. They can clear a monthly minimum spend in one go, which moves some cards onto a higher foreign-currency rate, and they can run into a monthly cap, after which further spend earns a lower rate or nothing. The note in each row shows which applies at the amount you enter. A trip charged within one statement month is closer to the table’s assumption than one that straddles two statement dates.

Hotels commonly place a pre-authorisation hold at check-in and charge the final bill at check-out. The hold and the final charge are converted separately, so the hold shown in your banking app may not match the SGD that eventually posts. The FX fee is applied to the transaction that posts, not to the hold.

On cash, yen bought from a money changer in Singapore carries the changer’s spread inside its rate. A withdrawal from a Singapore credit card at a Japanese ATM is a cash advance under the card’s terms, with its own fee and interest, so it is not costed in the table. Debit and multi-currency accounts follow their own fee schedules, which this page does not model.

Paying in SGD abroad: dynamic currency conversion

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is when a terminal, ATM or checkout page offers to charge you in Singapore dollars instead of the local currency. If you accept, the merchant’s payment provider converts the amount at a rate it sets, with its own margin built in, and the card network’s conversion is skipped.

Paying in JPY instead leaves a single conversion with the card network, followed by your issuer’s published foreign-currency fee. With DCC, the merchant’s margin replaces the network rate, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD transactions processed outside Singapore, so the total can carry two layers of cost instead of one.

Declining it at a terminal in Japan:

  • When the screen shows two amounts, one in SGD and one in JPY, select the JPY amount.
  • If the cashier selects for you, ask for the charge in JPY before you tap or enter your PIN.
  • On a printed slip, check that the currency is JPY and that no conversion rate or markup line appears.
  • Online, choose the local-currency price where a checkout offers a currency switch.

Common questions

How much is 1 SGD in JPY today?

1 SGD = 122.65 JPY at the ECB reference rate for 23 Oct 2026. Put the other way, ¥100 is about S$0.82. The reference rate is published once per business day and is not a live trading rate.

How much is ¥10,000 in SGD?

¥10,000 is about S$81.53 at the reference rate for 23 Oct 2026, and ¥50,000 is about S$407.66. A card charge adds the issuer’s FX fee to those figures before any rewards.

Is it cheaper to be charged in SGD or JPY by card in Japan?

When a Japanese terminal offers SGD, accepting it lets the merchant’s provider convert at its own rate and margin, and some issuers still add a fee for SGD charges processed abroad. Paying in JPY leaves the conversion to the card network plus the issuer’s published fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%.

Which fees apply when I pay by card in Japan?

Visa and Mastercard each convert at their own daily rate, which can differ from the ECB reference rate. The issuer’s foreign-currency fee is then added. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Hotel deposits and pre-authorisation holds are released or replaced by the final charge, which is the amount the fee applies to.

How has SGD to JPY moved over the last 90 days?

Over the 90 days to 23 Oct 2026, 1 SGD ranged from 121.32 JPY (09 Sep 2026) to 126.82 JPY (27 Jul 2026), averaging 123.8 JPY (ECB via Frankfurter). Past movements are not indicative of future rates.
