These figures are estimates based on the amount and mile value you entered. They are not a quote from any bank or card network, and the SGD that posts to your statement can differ.

Assumptions used
  • The foreign amount is converted at the ECB reference rate. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) apply their own daily rates, which can differ from the ECB reference rate.
  • FX fees are as published by each issuer as of 23 Oct 2026, applied to the converted amount.
  • The purchase is a single in-store transaction, and it is the only foreign-currency spend on the card this month. A minimum-spend threshold is tested against this amount alone.
  • Rewards are earned on the SGD charged, including the FX fee, and miles are valued at the cents-per-mile figure you set.
Not modelled
  • Rewards are subject to issuer exclusions, caps, merchant category (MCC) rules and promotional periods, which can change or end.
  • Other spend on the card in the same month, which can move a card past a minimum spend or into a cap.
  • Dynamic currency conversion, cash advances, ATM fees, merchant surcharges and annual-fee waivers.
  • Welcome offers and rewards on spend outside this one transaction.

Where US dollar charges come from

US dollar charges can come from online purchases as easily as from travel: software subscriptions, overseas retailers and booking sites that price in USD. Each of these reaches your card as a foreign-currency transaction, so the issuer’s FX fee applies even though you never left Singapore.

That is why this page runs USD to SGD rather than the other way round. The usual question is what a dollar price comes to in Singapore dollars, so the converter starts from US$, and the swap button turns it around for anyone holding SGD and buying dollars.

The card table assumes an in-store purchase. Some cards set a different rate for online foreign-currency spend, or exclude some online categories, and the conditions printed in each row say where SGfi found that. If most of your USD spending is online, read those conditions alongside the reward column.

Two mechanics catch people out with dollar charges. A refund on a foreign-currency purchase is converted again on the day it is processed, so the SGD credited back can differ from the SGD originally charged, and whether the original FX fee is reversed depends on the issuer’s terms. Separately, a merchant that offers to bill you in SGD instead of USD is performing dynamic currency conversion (explained above), which replaces the network’s rate with the merchant’s own.

For travel, US dollar cash bought in Singapore is priced through the money changer’s spread, while a card charge uses the network rate plus the issuer’s fee. The reference rate on this page is a neutral midpoint for checking either quote. Planning to spend another currency? The currency converter hub lists every pair SGfi covers.

Paying in SGD abroad: dynamic currency conversion

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is when a terminal, ATM or checkout page offers to charge you in Singapore dollars instead of the local currency. If you accept, the merchant’s payment provider converts the amount at a rate it sets, with its own margin built in, and the card network’s conversion is skipped.

Paying in USD instead leaves a single conversion with the card network, followed by your issuer’s published foreign-currency fee. With DCC, the merchant’s margin replaces the network rate, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD transactions processed outside Singapore, so the total can carry two layers of cost instead of one.

Declining it at a terminal in the United States:

  • When the screen shows two amounts, one in SGD and one in USD, select the USD amount.
  • If the cashier selects for you, ask for the charge in USD before you tap or enter your PIN.
  • On a printed slip, check that the currency is USD and that no conversion rate or markup line appears.
  • Online, choose the local-currency price where a checkout offers a currency switch.

Common questions

How much is 1 USD in SGD today?

At the ECB reference rate for 23 Oct 2026, US$1 is about S$1.28 (1 SGD = 0.78218 USD). The figure is a midpoint published once per business day, not a dealing rate.

Does the FX fee apply to USD online purchases made in Singapore?

A charge in US dollars is a foreign-currency transaction wherever you make it, so the issuer’s foreign-currency fee applies to online USD purchases too. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Rewards on online foreign spend can follow different rules from in-store spend, as the row conditions in the table note.

Is it cheaper to be charged in SGD or USD by card?

Paying in USD lets the card network convert and adds the issuer’s published fee. Paying in SGD when a merchant offers it means the merchant’s provider converts at a rate it sets, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD charges processed overseas. Comparing each quote with the reference rate on this page shows the margin in each.

Which fees apply when I pay by card in US dollars?

Visa and Mastercard each convert at their own daily rate, which can differ from the ECB reference rate. On top of that conversion, the issuer charges its foreign-currency transaction fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Any rewards earned offset part of the cost; the table shows the net SGD figure for each card at your amount.

How has USD to SGD moved over the last 90 days?

Over the 90 days to 23 Oct 2026, US$1 was worth between S$1.26 (09 Sep 2026) and S$1.29 (28 Jul 2026), based on ECB reference rates via Frankfurter. Past movements are not indicative of future rates.
