These figures are estimates based on the amount and mile value you entered. They are not a quote from any bank or card network, and the SGD that posts to your statement can differ.

Assumptions used
  • The foreign amount is converted at the ECB reference rate. Card networks (Visa, Mastercard) apply their own daily rates, which can differ from the ECB reference rate.
  • FX fees are as published by each issuer as of 23 Oct 2026, applied to the converted amount.
  • The purchase is a single in-store transaction, and it is the only foreign-currency spend on the card this month. A minimum-spend threshold is tested against this amount alone.
  • Rewards are earned on the SGD charged, including the FX fee, and miles are valued at the cents-per-mile figure you set.
Not modelled
  • Rewards are subject to issuer exclusions, caps, merchant category (MCC) rules and promotional periods, which can change or end.
  • Other spend on the card in the same month, which can move a card past a minimum spend or into a cap.
  • Dynamic currency conversion, cash advances, ATM fees, merchant surcharges and annual-fee waivers.
  • Welcome offers and rewards on spend outside this one transaction.

Spending ringgit from Singapore

Ringgit spending from Singapore usually comes in two shapes. One is the short trip across the Causeway to Johor, often repeated, made up of many small bills for meals, groceries and fuel. The other is a longer holiday further north, in Kuala Lumpur or Penang, where hotel stays push single transactions much higher. The card table above is built for one amount in one statement month, so it fits the second pattern more closely than the first.

A foreign-currency fee is a percentage, so it costs the same proportion on a RM15 lunch as on a RM1,500 hotel bill. What changes with transaction size is the reward side. A bonus rate gated by a monthly minimum spend is easy to reach with one large hotel charge and harder to reach with a few small purchases spread across separate trips. If your ringgit spending is a string of small amounts, enter the monthly total rather than a single bill to see how the minimum-spend and cap notes change.

Card or cash is mainly a question of where the conversion margin sits. A card adds a published fee on top of the network’s conversion rate. A money changer quotes a buy or sell rate with its margin already built in, so there is no separate fee line to compare. Checking a changer’s quoted rate against the reference rate on this page shows that margin, which you can set against the fee percentages in the table.

Cash earns no rewards and has no purchase protection, while a card charge can be disputed with the issuer. Cardholder agreements also price cash advances separately from purchases, with their own fee and interest, so withdrawing ringgit from a credit card at an ATM is costed differently and is not part of the table.

Paying in SGD abroad: dynamic currency conversion

Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) is when a terminal, ATM or checkout page offers to charge you in Singapore dollars instead of the local currency. If you accept, the merchant’s payment provider converts the amount at a rate it sets, with its own margin built in, and the card network’s conversion is skipped.

Paying in MYR instead leaves a single conversion with the card network, followed by your issuer’s published foreign-currency fee. With DCC, the merchant’s margin replaces the network rate, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD transactions processed outside Singapore, so the total can carry two layers of cost instead of one.

Declining it at a terminal in Malaysia:

  • When the screen shows two amounts, one in SGD and one in MYR, select the MYR amount.
  • If the cashier selects for you, ask for the charge in MYR before you tap or enter your PIN.
  • On a printed slip, check that the currency is MYR and that no conversion rate or markup line appears.
  • Online, choose the local-currency price where a checkout offers a currency switch.

Common questions

How much is 1 SGD in MYR today?

At the ECB reference rate for 23 Oct 2026, 1 SGD = 3.1956 MYR, so RM1 is about S$0.31. This is a reference midpoint published once per business day; a money changer or card network quotes its own rate.

How much is RM1,500 in SGD?

RM1,500 converts to about S$469.40 at the reference rate for 23 Oct 2026. On a card, the issuer’s FX fee is added to that, and any rewards offset part of it. The table above shows the net figure for each card.

Is it cheaper to be charged in SGD or MYR by card in Malaysia?

Paying in MYR leaves the conversion to the card network and adds the issuer’s published FX fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. Choosing SGD at a Malaysian terminal hands the conversion to the merchant’s provider, which sets its own rate and margin, and some issuers still apply a fee to SGD charges processed outside Singapore. Both quotes can be checked against the reference rate on this page.

Which fees apply when I pay by card in Malaysia?

Up to three layers. Visa and Mastercard each convert at their own daily rate, which can differ from the ECB reference rate. The issuer then adds its foreign-currency transaction fee. For the cards SGfi has verified, issuer fees run from 3% to 3.5%. A merchant may also add a card surcharge, which is part of the ringgit amount and is converted with it.

How has SGD to MYR moved over the last 90 days?

Over the 90 days to 23 Oct 2026, 1 SGD ranged from 3.1634 MYR (31 Aug 2026) to 3.2215 MYR (09 Sep 2026), averaging 3.1901 MYR (ECB via Frankfurter). Past movements are not indicative of future rates.
